Next up in the Run 4 Wales Virtual Challenge Series, running throughout the month of October is the I Beat Steve challenge. The virtual 5K race will challenge runners to race Cardiff Half Marathon Race Director and Olympic Marathon runner Steve Brace over the popular parkrun distance.

The former winner of Paris & Berlin Marathon’s has a 5K PB of 13:50, clocked at Battersea 5km in 1995 but after a hip replacement is more often seen in high-viz than running shorts, directing Run 4 Wales events, local races and the weekly Porthcawl parkrun. He’ll just be looking to finish as he comes out of running retirement especially for this new virtual event.

Prizes will be up for grabs for each runner that manages to Beat Steve in the event which will support the R4W Charitable Foundation, with runners able to make an optional donation or fundraise to support grassroots sports and community projects.

Entry cost just £8 and will include a commemorative finishers medal, access to the official results platform and training tips and insight from Steve who represented Britain in the marathon at the Barcelona and Atlanta Olympic Games. Entries are now open, available at http://bit.ly/iBeatSteve.

Submit your evidence

You can run the race anytime throughout October, but must submit evidence you have covered the 5K (3.1 mile) distance before the 31 October which can be done here. The system will allow submissions from 1 October onwards.

Submitting your results is easy – just enter your registration ID (which can be found on this confirmation email), type in your finish time and upload a supporting piece of evidence.

Evidence can be a photograph of a treadmill, smartwatch or a screenshot from a fitness tracker or GPS activity.

Prizes and finishers items

If you submit your result before the 31 October deadline you will receive a finishers medal in the post. These will be dispatched at the end of the participation window as Steve’s finish time is revealed and you will receive an email to confirm it’s on its way.

You’ll earn bragging rights by running in the same virtual race as an Olympian as well as having a 5K training goal to focus on – but there are also other prizes up for grabs!

The top 5 men and top 5 women on the leaderboard will win a complimentary R4W Membership for 2021. 5 other runners will be picked at random to win a complimentary 2021 R4W race entry meaning there’s chance for runners of all abilities to win!
